Application Information - Next Application Period 2010-2011


E-Education in Research Ethics: Central and Eastern Europe
The Program is sponsored by Union Graduate College Bioethics Program (Schenectady, New York) in partnership with the Department of Medical History and Ethics of Vilnius University. It is supported by NIH Research Grant # D43 TW007085 funded by the Fogarty International Center, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.


Qualifications


The Program is open to anyone administering, conducting or teaching research methods or research ethics including: bioethicists, biomedical scientists, ethics committee members, lawyers, managers, nurses, philosophers, physicians, researchers and social scientists. Individuals working or teaching in public institutions are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants must be fluent (speaking, reading, writing) in English.
  • They must have access to an up-to-date computer with Internet connection.
  • They must hold a degree beyond the BA or diploma and have substantial administrative, teaching, research, or clinical experience relevant to research ethics.
  • They must provide evidence of ability to implement the results of their education.
Selection Criteria:
  • Likelihood of making a substantial impact in their institution/community/country after the training year
  • Educational background and degrees
  • Relevant experience in research involving human subjects or research ethics
  • Past accomplishments, including publications and projects established or supervised
Expectations of Students:
  • Students taking graduate courses in the Advanced Certificate Program are expected to devote at least 10-12 hours per week to their studies.
They are expected to participate in a timely fashion to asynchronous on-line discussion and to prepare brief written assignments on a weekly basis. All communication will be in English.

Application Process:
Applicants must submit a complete application (see below), current curriculum vitae (no longer than 10 pages) and three letters of reference, one of which should provide evidence of support for implementation of the results of the education in research ethics.

Drs. Gefenas, Strosberg, and Philpott will review all applications and select the most promising, which will then be reviewed by the Admissions Committee of the UGC Bioethics Program. Telephone and/or on-line interviews will be required. The Program will begin in Vilnius, Lithuania in August, 2011.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications is April 1, 2011.

Applicants chosen for the Program will be notified by May 15, 2011.
